Below you will find my story of when and how I began creating! Individual stories of how each of the Midwest Cottage USA sections began, continue this long Welcome page! At the very end, you will find some statistics on what it takes to create just 1 plastic canvas Cross Bookmark! Coupon Codes can be found there as well.
First of all, 2024 marks 11 years since we opened our shop!
(Back story information: When our shop opened in March 2013, the name of our shop was, "Morrell Creations", and both my husband and a couple of our children were regularly contributing to the handmade crafts/products in our shop. Now, our name, Midwest Cottage USA, expresses how I have been focusing on creating our shop to reflect my proud, American heritage! I now choose to only purchase from US sellers, and I am always on the lookout for American-made products as well.)
We hope you enjoy our following stories, and a little bit about what you can expect to find in each of my shop sections. Please feel free to message me anytime with your questions, suggestions, and comments, etc.
My earliest memories include me crafting in some way or another! Each Christmas, I joyfully include hanging the many handcrafted ornaments I made as a child; many others were loving gifts from wonderful Sunday School teachers! My first recollection of ever creating gifts to give to others were when my closest brother and I cut out white paper snowflakes! We carefully wrapped them in simple, lined notebook paper and tape and then proudly gave them to our parents and each another for Christmas!
Beginning at age 6, my grandmother taught me how to cross stitch on a stamped pillowcase. Later, around age 8 or 9, I began purchasing small stamped embroidery kits and completing them as gifts for family and my beloved school teachers.
My teen years found me fabric painting T-shirts for myself and family.
On New Year's Day 1992, Dean's Mom taught me how to stitch a plastic canvas cross bookmark. (Our families had recently met, and we were getting together for the first time for the holiday) [Since then, I have created additional plastic canvas bookmarks, as well as ornaments and two different sizes of star tree toppers. (All of these remain some of my best sellers here and in-person!]
In time for Christmas 2015, I took on a huge couple of years' project that was very time consuming: personalized oval placemats for our children, nieces, and nephews.
My first experience with creating products to sell began after my late, dear Aunt Lu, moved just a few minutes from us. At the time, she worked in a mail room, and asked me if I'd create 4 or 5 fabric painted T-shirts, and she'd take them to work to try and sell? After displaying the shirts on her rolling mail cart, several fellow employees purchased them for 10.00 each. One time, a gentleman requested a custom shirt with a fish theme! Though that was far different from the hearts and flowers I was used to painting, he really liked it and bought it from my aunt!
Not long after this, my Aunt Lu gave me her rubber stamp collection, and taught me how to create beautiful greeting cards as well as take care of the stamps and supplies.
I really enjoyed learning how to create handmade cards for all occasions, and have saved several from those early years. Decades later, I fondly remember my dear Aunt Lu whenever I create cards, free bookmarks for our local library, To/From gift tags, and envelopes, etc. I've learned much over the years. If my aunt were still living, I know she'd be thrilled knowing I've already begun teaching my own daughters how to create their own cards!
I continue to enjoy learning new techniques including embossing and die cutting using both a Big Shot and Cricut Expression 2 machine, as you'll see in my newest designs. My passion remains with embossing powders as well as coloring with watercolor pencils before "painting" the images to make them my own. Various ribbon (now organized on a wood shelf holder my husband, Dean, made for me) abundantly appeals to me as well, and I try and incorporate ribbon wherever I can. Finally, paper brads and eyelets make their way into some of my cards to add dimension and "pop"! You can look forward to receiving a signed, handcrafted "Thank You note" in each of your orders!
The Christmas before I left for college, I decided to try my hand at something new. I purchased the supplies to create approximately 24 inch Christmas wreaths for my mother and a couple of other friends. I hot glued "Christmas picks" and tied festive ribbon around each one as well. The ladies loved receiving their wreaths for Christmas, and they continue to enjoy displaying them each year when they decorate!
While I was away at college, I no longer had time for hobbies. Then, in 1997, I married the man God planned for me, and we're enjoying 26+ amazing/challenging years together. For 23 of those years, we have been busily caring and training our four equally unique, and special, blessings. Now that they are getting older, we've been able to enjoy our hobbies more. More important than our hobbies, though, has been training our children to follow the Lord Jesus Christ's will for their lives. We have also begun to pass along our knowledge to our children of how to create our hobbies, and/or have encouraged them to branch out and take up their own! We invite you to look for our children's creations in our shop as well...when they're ready to try and sell them to you!
A little bit more about Dean, is that when he's not fishing and trying to catch "the big one", Dean enjoys reading books and watching documentaries; especially about WWII! Hobbies for Dean have been fixing computers (sometimes for a little bit of money on the side); and woodworking. Dean dreams of being able to turn the latter hobby into a profitable business. Dean first began woodworking at his late-father's knee. Over the past 2 decades, Dean has honed his skills, and now absolutely loves woodworking! He especially enjoys perfecting hand-cut dovetails! His interests lie with using mostly hand tools, and he is the main carpenter for our wood crafts and products. Dean handmade all of the wooden switch plates, but he no longer desires to create these as they are a lot of work, that he no longer has time to invest in.
The switch plates we have in our shop are "while supplies last".
Although, Dean has done custom work for others, including room transitions, benches, and custom cabinets, for our home, he's built shelves, transitions, cabinets, and hutches. His crème` de` la` crème`, though, is the pie safe he built for me to store our homeschool books and supplies in! It took Dean 2 years to build that in between "life"! The most recent projects he's made have been a wood craft cabinet, where I'm able to store my rubber stamps and cardstock. There is even a secret drawer! Currently, a beautiful dishwasher cabinet is waiting for a long weekend where we can replace our portable dishwasher with a "built in" one that will be housed in this cabinet. The wood top is just gorgeous with the layers of food safe polyurethane!
Personally. I have loved reading for many years! My favorite genre is Historical Christian Fiction, followed by Contemporary Christian Fiction and Classics. I am so thankful that I had the honor of teaching each of our 4 blessings how to read as well! I also enjoy playing board and card games with my family, baking, and gardening; especially tending my Mother's Day flowers. I also enjoy watching classic movies starring Doris Day, Jane Austen adaptations (Ah, Mr. Darcy!), and older Hallmark movies! I'm "one of those crazy people" who enjoys Christmas in July (or watching a Christmas movie during Spring Break!)
Below you will find individual stories of how each of the Midwest Cottage USA sections began!
Awesome Anklets Gifts section began with the desire of mine to create a unique gift for my daughter's birthday. She enjoys her anklet to this day (as she has grown, I've needed to add a couple of extra jump rings to her anklet so that it still fits!) I also created a few for myself to match some jewelry that I already had. Our Midwest summers may be short, but I LOVE wearing my triple strand, braided anklets as much as possible! Your anklets are created with your own colors and/or charms if desired!
Aromatherapy Pins came about as a result of a need for our daughter, Esther, to be able to smell "Basil" essential oil to help ease her suffering from headaches and migraines. Because she wanted to be able to wear her own jewelry, I converted locket pendants into pins/brooches. Additional styles and colors of pins have been added since then, and extra hand-cut leather disks are available for all!
Bonny Bookmarks feature both plastic canvas cross bookmarks that I have created, as well as DIY kits that I've put together so you can learn how to create your own! (Simple instructions can be found in the listing description. However, if you have any questions at all, please feel free to message me anytime. You can also do an online search for Algerian Stitch.)
Brilliant Bracelets came about after my Dad requested a custom pearl birthstone Grandmother's bracelet gift for my mom for Christmas 2014. All 9 of her grandchildren (at the time; there are 10 now, and I have since redone my Mom's bracelet to add in the 10th pearl!), were represented by colored glass pearls. My dad then chose silver for the Secondary color choice. This meant that I spaced silver plated, glass faux crystal rondelles as well as silver glass pearls to complete the bracelet design. My Mom loves her bracelet, and wears it all the time!
Candid Charms section includes custom silver, gold, copper, and bronze/brass plated charm bracelets. Matching silver charm necklace and earrings are also available. Most recently, I've added several Sports charms options as well as Alphabet letters! Each charm bracelet comes with your choice of 3 charms. Additional charms can be added as well.
Creative Cards feature a variety of special occasion cards. Personalization is also an option. For custom orders, as well as most of the cards I make, each usually consists of a 14-16 step process. Yes, I literally work in "steps". A few of the elements that may be featured in your cards are: embossing (both with my Big Shot and with pigment ink and powders), stamping, cutting, colored pencil coloring and "painting" (using an aqua pen); as well as materials including: brads and eyelets; ribbon; stickers (made with my 1-1/2 inch sticker maker); etc. A lot of love goes into the process to create each card. At a parent/teacher conference we attended recently, I gave our high school daughters' teachers a gift package that included 4 handcrafted Thank You cards and a matching bookmark. [To view these and other posts/items/sales, please feel free to check out my Facebook business page]: https://www.facebook.com/MidwestCottageUSA
Crochet & Knitting Tools feature my snag-less crochet and knitting markers. Featuring either gemstones or glass pearls, I incorporate wooden beads in between each fun and durable link as well. Various colors contrast with your yarn colors while you work on your projects! Lobster clasps for each crochet marker allow you to keep more than one place! Knitting markers feature round jump rings that are large enough for up to needles size 5.0 (US Size 8). Both stitch markers sets come with a holder to prevent losing your markers when you need to walk away from your project/s for a bit!
Gorgeous Gems were a natural extension of my Mother Daughter Gifts after receiving several custom orders for non-metal jewelry. These folks needed jewelry that they could wear without fear of any skin reactions. Natural stones, semi-precious stones, and rocks have always fascinated me! I love the look, feel, and uniqueness of each stone and bead. I was inspired by my late grandfather, Robert, who had a great love for rocks and minerals. When living in both his younger adult and post WWII days, he regularly hiked the mountains of Idaho and Colorado looking for and collecting rough rocks that were to him, "potential" beauties! After tumbling and polishing his "diamonds in the rough", he designed and created beautiful jewelry! Perhaps his passion for creating beautiful jewelry was passed down to me? For my tenth birthday, he gave me a gorgeous, one-of-a-kind, heart shaped turquoise pendant. When I first began making jewelry, I used this pendant as a beginning "stepping stone" to learning how to create necklaces. My own jewelry set using my special pendant from my Grandpa is still one of my favorites to this day! Wire Wrapped turquoise earrings, bracelets, and an anklet have joined the braided turquoise heart necklace! I aspire to continue to grow the variety of semi precious gemstones available in our shop. Up until this point, I have focused on creating matching mother daughter bracelets. Sizes now include both children and adults, so please feel free to order multiple bracelet gift sets! You can still order these individually; many gemstones lend themselves to a "unisex" style.
Elegant Earrings all are wire wrapped using Nickel free metals in silver, gold, copper, and bronze/brass.
Hair Accessories section includes custom loopy hair scrunchies created by Jenna. Additionally, I recently was inspired to try and come up with a way to use some of the larger buttons I inherited from my grandmother. I've been able to use some of the smaller ones to add interest to both mine and my daughters outfits and purses, as well as craft projects for my children and local church children's crafts, etc.
After finding the perfect ponytail holder pieces from an Etsy seller, I was able to create some unique, ponytail hair ties using some of those vintage buttons! Because many of the buttons are one-of-a-kind, most ponytail holders are unique. (A few multiples/matching ponytail holders are available for pigtails!)
Joyful Jewelry features earrings with holiday themes! Think Valentine's Day, Easter, 4th of July, (as well as other American holidays); Jewish holidays, such as Hanukkah; and of course, Christmas.
Keyrings & Zipper Pulls were born after a friend's recommendation. She suggested that keychains might make a nice addition to our shop! I have been enjoying creating eclectic styles, colors, and incorporating various metals. Mixing those with gemstone beads and charms give each custom keychain it's own story! (Please note that the keyrings themselves do contain nickel. If you are interested in keychains, but need Nickel-free, please send me a message, and I'll see what I can do.)
Ornate Ornaments Gifts section features matching star and circle ornaments. These can be displayed on Christmas trees, home decor` hooks, and from car rear view mirrors, etc. Many Custom (you choose your own yarn colors) ornaments are available. Patriotic, Gender Reveal, and Wedding/Anniversary ornaments are just a few that are already available. Your special occasion can be added in any of the custom listings!
The story behind these ornaments is as follows:
Dean's mom worked tirelessly, the months leading up to our wedding the summer of 1997, creating dozens of Christmas ornaments for Dean and I as her wedding present to us. Her story, as she told it, is that she and Dean's dad's first Christmas included very few Christmas decorations. She greatly desired for us to begin our marriage - and 1st Christmas - with beautiful, handmade ornaments. We still use the ornaments she made for us every year. That's not all, though! Grandma Carol, as we have taught our children to refer to her (even though she passed away from cancer 4-1/2 years after Dean and I were married), created a very special, memorable decoration. Dean grew up with a plastic canvas angel gracing the top of their Christmas tree; Heidi grew up with a foil covered cardboard star that her dad had carefully cut out and created years' ago for his bride for their 1st Christmas. Keeping both traditions in mind, Grandma Carol designed and created a 3-piece Star Angel using plastic canvas, and an altered pattern. I was so touched that she went to so much work for us out of an amazing love for her first born and future daughter-in-love! Our Star Angel is one of our most precious Christmas decorations that we enjoy every year!
Mother Daughter Gifts were some of the very first items in our shop back in 2013! After coming across a beautiful poem online, I contacted the author to request her permission to use her poem so that I could create my own bracelets and include the poem. Her affirmation included a one time licensing fee, as well as a request that I include her blog name at the bottom of every poem. When you see, "tiedyedivadesigns.blogspot.com", I am giving her due recognition.
The first day of kindergarten mother daughter bracelet sets, tied with matching ribbon onto the aforementioned kindergarten poem card, continue to be some of our best sellers. I have gone on to create some variations of the original poem to fit custom requests. In 2019, I composed my own poem for mommies to be, available in pink, blue, white, or custom colors! The year prior, I was inspired to create matching bracelets for our young daughter and I when we found out she needed surgery involving a vital organ. She was thrilled to wear her matching bracelet, along with me, the day after surgery. I believe that this helped ease some of her anxiety and pain. I revised the original poem to fit our special circumstance, and thought that there may be others in similar circumstances who would appreciate a special mother daughter bracelet set for an upcoming hospital stay--with or without his/her mama being able to be there. I made sure that there are no metals at all used in these particular bracelets, so they won't interfere with any hospital machines/regulations. Additionally, the stretchy bracelets are able to fit easily over the hand that doesn't have wires.
RTS Super Sale Gifts feature a variety of discounted items from our shop. Not only Ready to Ship, but they're perfect for adding on to your order to achieve your 35.00 minimum order total for FREE shipping!
Special Sets Gifts section has come about primarily through custom orders - which I have a particular love and passion for! Being able to both design and create new items thrills me to no end! Each year, I strive to design and create special Mother's Day and birthday gifts for my mom. (Her special days happen to be close to each other; so I try and put together special jewelry sets for her!) An example of a special gift that you can choose your colors for, is a custom beaded bangle memory wire bracelet and triple link earrings set. Gold sets are available here:

Trendy Tree Topper Gifts have become some of my most favorite, and best sellers as well!
The story behind these began when my children and I were working on putting up our Christmas decorations for the 2015 season. When I couldn't find our star tree topper for our small, 15 inch tabletop mini tree, I decided to make a new one! I stitched together two plastic canvas star shapes and left one end open to fit over the top of our tree! Wouldn't you believe that our other star was found within hours of my completing making that star tree topper! Our whole family decided that they liked the new one I made better, and so that old/found star was given a new place of honor. Special requests have led to me creating various colors of small, mini tree star toppers, as well as larger, 5 inch ones as well, that are perfect for larger, big trees.
Wonderful Wood Gifts features Dean's FINAL wooden switch plates. These are while supplies last only.

ANSWERS TO TRIVIA:
What goes into creating one Bonny Bookmark Gift?
A: 252 stitches includes the small square and cross!
A: From cutting the shapes to stitching and edging one bookmark, it takes about 1 hour!
A lot of LOVE goes into each one, even if I will never know who will enjoy their bookmark gifts for years to come! :)
June of 2021 I had the great honor of teaching some ladies from my church family how to stitch these plastic canvas cross bookmarks! I planned what I called a Ladies Craft Sat (happened on a Saturday...we needed to sit most of the time to work on the bookmarks!) Those of us involved, worked on creating bookmarks to gift to our missionaries. In spite of the pandemic, a couple of us were able to ship the finished bookmarks to every country, and finally in the fall of 2022, we were able to ship the last ones to India!

Frequently asked questions
What kind of metals do you use?
Metals are nickel free* and are either made with zinc alloy, antiqued silver or gold plating, sterling silver, brass, bronze, or copper. Please see individual listings for specifics. If you need or prefer certain metals, please let us know that in the "Note to Seller" section of your order. We'd be more than happy to make any substitutes you need at little or no additional cost to you! (Please note that certain metals such as sterling silver & solid gold prices fluctuate based on current market prices, and their cost will be reflected.) *Please note: Keyrings only all feature nickel-based plated split rings. If this is a problem for you, but you are still interested in our keychains, please message us with your inquiry.
Are your items from a smoke-free and pet-free home?
All items come from our smoke-free, cat-friendly home, where Perry and Jasmine are well-loved by our family! (If you have any concerns regarding pet dander, please feel free to message me, and I'll share my plans to create/prepare your products away from our cats. However, I cannot 100% guarantee that your items will arrive without a pet hair or whisker tagalong!)

Do you allow cancellations, returns, or exchanges?
Due to the majority of our products being custom orders most cannot be returned. In the event of a life-changing tragedy or similar, I (Heidi) will consider your request, & make every effort to work with you in a manner that is befitting your circumstance. Although I pride myself on quality packaging, in the event of product damage upon arrival, I will replace your product/s at my expense. Etsy is now protecting sellers against buyers who "change their mind", etc., and will not authorize returns in those instances. I do want your experience with Midwest Cottage USA to be amazing, & your special gifts cherished! My aim is your 100% satisfaction & consistent, 5 star ratings. Please feel free to message me with your questions. Thanks so much!
How do I use my essential oils on my leather disk pads that come with my aromatherapy locket pin?
To use, simply apply 1-2 drops of essential oil to the leather disk pad located inside of your locket. You can then enjoy the wonderful benefits of aromatherapy throughout your day! The disk pads can be reused many times, though it is highly recommended that you dedicate each pad to one oil or oil blend to keep from unintentionally mixing oils.
Additional replacement leather disk pads are available for each shape & size, in sets of 5: www.etsy.com/listing/287395709/aromatherapy-leather-disks-5-piece-set

What if my package hasn't arrived by the estimated deadline?
We are not responsible for your order once it is received by the US Postal Service or other shipping company. Shipping issues are to be resolved between the purchaser and the shipping company. The best way to receive a delayed package is to try to find information online using the provided Tracking #, included with all orders. If that doesn't work, you may try to take the tracking number down in-person to your local post office or shipping company. The worker will be able to contact the locater service they use to find your package and have it delivered to you.
Thanks so much for understanding!
